Lightning Greaves

Artifact — Equipment

Equipped creature has haste and shroud. (It can't be the target of spells or abilities.)

Equip (: Attach to target creature you control. Equip only as a sorcery. This card enters the battlefield unattached and stays on the battlefield if the creature this card is attached to leaves the battlefield.)

Not sure if you want to break up with Inalla... I know that feeling. She's a lot of fun, but it tends to steer away from a functionally playable state. Most of the time, I found myself missing a finisher or unable to execute what was needed due to mana shortages for my fun combos. The times I did win were either with a weenie stomp or when my fun combos actually worked.

Anyway, this week, I updated my Inalla deck and I'd like to share my insights.

Too Many Strategies/Themes All the wizards with unique flavors want a place in this deck. However, thinking about spells and combos quickly dilutes the deck's strategy. So, I decided on the main strategy and an extra theme (like ramp, draw, etc.) to support that strategy. Each theme must consist of between 8-16 cards in the deck. This ensures there's a better chance of drawing the theme cards. The additional category I labeled as 'value' tags. These are cards that help the deck but aren't essential for supporting the main strategy. This is where the first cuts are made.

Take, for example, Beguiler of Wills. I love that card - its ability and art are so cool. However, it's expensive at 6 mana (Inalla trigger for haste), and most of the time, my board state was poor due to having a lot of expensive cards. So, I found myself only stealing a power 2-3 creature. Everyone would know what happens next turn and react accordingly, necessitating more mana for protection. What's the strategy here? Stealing the big bad (eventually) or gathering combo pieces? This led me to cut her. BUT if the strategy/theme involves untap/tap effects like Intruder Alarm & Faces of the Past, this card makes more sense (although it still needs haste from Lightning Greaves).

This puzzling process indeed takes time, and time can sometimes make us lose sight of the original purpose of the deck. Getting caught up in exploring cards and potential combos can make it even harder to create a functional deck. I hope my insights and struggles shed some light on yours. It's a journey to strike the right balance between fun and functionality in deck-building.

Niko9 on Choosing Equipment-based Card Draw in …

I think you hit the main ones for card advantage, and I really like Mask of Memory because you are running Karmic Guide and Bruna, the Fading Light  Meld and you can sometimes pitch a big creature to get reanimated. I have a Bruna deck and it's very fun to reanimate in mono white : )

Other equips you might consider in general are: Dowsing Dagger  Flip is great with flyers, and pays back 3 of it's 4 mana often on the turn it comes down.

Hedgewitch's Mask I really like this one, especially with flying creatures to limit who can block them even more.

Explorer's Scope might just be my all time favorite equip, but it might just be me : ) Most often it is just a more efficient Wayfarer's Bauble and even if it bricks, it's surprisingly valuable to know your next draw and plan your plays before you draw.

And one I really like in angels is Concerted Effort It can turn Mother of Runes into boardwipe protection, or give your whole team double strike, or just make your support creatures flyers.

Oh, and also, equip decks can have a lot of fun with Leonin Shikari that can give all creatures Lightning Greaves or add on more Sword of Fire and Ice triggers, more Sword of the Animist triggers, it's always pretty good.

Axis is your own effect, so it isn't affected by your own Hexproof (this is different than Shroud, see Lightning Greaves), unless you mean you run into that card a lot? If so then Axis won't be as consistent, but you could also consider running Soltari Visionary to blow up Enchantments.

One nice thing about Skullclamp is that you can always put it on your creature that is most likely to be killed, this at least nets you 2 cards if it happens (it also stacks with actual sacrifice effects since it doesn't kill the creature unless it has 1 toughness).

I can see you being iffy about Angel's Trumpet, but my theory was that with your Commander people are almost certainly going to try to swing at one another, because if they don't all their creatures are going to die and give you the only board. Meanwhile, those 1/1s have evasion, so even if most opponents will benefit from vigilance, your creatures might not care because they can still get in (and are then available to block). It might depend on how people in your area play, so no offense taken.

A few you might consider trimming are: Blight Herder, this is a lot of mana for very little value if you can't make the 1/1s. Ironclad Slayer seems like a poor fit to me, when I run stuff like this it's always in my opener! Do you have many cards that care about Ugin, the Ineffable's effect? 6 mana is an awful lot for this effect when Vindicate exists, and the tokens are pretty minor in Commander, I think you need to care about each of the abilities for Ugin to make sense. Is Relic Seeker in here just to find Dowsing Dagger? It seems like it'd be a challenge to actually achieve Renown with Seeker. All That Glitters is often a very strong card, but I'm not entirely convinced you have enough synergy to make it work, is Voltron really a good plan in this deck? Angelic Purge and Bone Shards are pretty 'meh' removal spells for an Orzhov deck, White has the best versatile removal effects by itself, to say nothing of Anguished Unmaking and Utter End, both of those are instants, and neither costs you a body (and both are more versatile). There is also Generous Gift in White, which lacks exile but hits anything. I don't love Celestial Judgement, aren't you likely to have a lot of 1/1s? It's great if you've got Cathar's Crusade out, but it can be pretty bad without it. Piercing Rays seems pretty unimpactful, it has too many limitations for a Sorcery speed effect that costs more than Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares. I don't like Acolyte's Reward, if you've got lots of White devotion surely you could just block?

Hope some of this helps!

OUT: Cultivator Colossus, Selvala, Heart of the Wilds, Fyndhorn Elves, Elves of Deep Shadow, Vampiric Tutor, Not Dead After All, Bala Ged Recovery  Flip, Demonic Tutor, Lightning Greaves, Greater Good

IN: Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus, Shakedown Heavy, Hunted Bonebrute, Tear Asunder, Nature's Claim, Culling Ritual, Nature's Lore, Arcane Signet, Unnatural Growth, Underground Mortuary

Trying to work out some kinks in this deck. I find myself without big boys to sac to the 'Rog sometimes. Also, upping the land count a little instead of using dorks that will die to Culling Ritual.

I may also come to regret pulling out the tutors, but I never know what to look for that will help me win immediately, so out they come for now.

if you don't mind me asking, why no Lightning Greaves?

indieinside, without play testing my immediate thoughts are, not enough ramp/draw...

I'd take out a few creatures, 37 is a lot for some more utility.

In the maybe board specifically...

Adaptive Automaton is good but again you have a lot of creature

Bloodline Pretender only buffs himself not worth imo

Crypt Rats - again if you can give this infect its a great wincon

The other rats are all ok and on theme but if anything can replace a relentless rat...

Lightning Greaves is a great call but i see you have already added it.

Necrogen Communion seems strong and worth an include

Death Denied seems to inefficient. your paying to return them to hand then still have to recast...just use Yawgmoth's Will

My valuation could easily be off since this is 1v1 focused and I am used to building with multiplayer in mind, but that's my thoughts.
