I first started playing MtG in 2013 via janky kitchen-table "Modern" with my college friends. We dove into EDH around 2019 & haven't looked back since.

I aim for mid-high powered casual, & when it makes sense to, usually include at least 1 combo wincon to help close grindy games. I like to have some variance in my play & only run a couple of suboptimal tutors in my combo-y decks.

is quickly becoming my favorite 3 color combo. Red & Black have grown on me the most since I've started playing MtG, especially EDH, and are probably my favorite single colors.

No prob Profet93, I appreciate the sincerity of your feedback on my deck and the many others I see you commenting on.

I do have a copy of Raking Canopy! I think I picked it up a couple of years ago when I was messing around with a Mono-Green build (and before Kura existed lol). It's definitely one that I've considered slotting as tech against Kangee, but have also held off because it feels really niche. The Kangee deck and its flyers definitely aren't the only flying creatures that I encounter on a regular basis. I'll definitely keep it in mind, especially if it ends up being a consistent enough issue worth addressing.

April 19, 2024 3:40 p.m.

Thank you for taking the time to offer your feedback, and for reading through the primer Profet93, I appreciate it.

I like what you've suggested and wanted to offer my thoughts in turn:

  • Skullclamp - A great card draw staple. I think I didn't initially consider this one mostly because I currently have ~8 creatures with 1 toughness, & don't really make small 1/1 tokens besides Preacher of the Schism. High likelihood for revisiting & inclusion.

  • Sakura-Tribe Elder/Rampant Growth - I could see Steve slotting in over Farseek. I have Farseek in here as a means of grabbing Overgrown Tomb for quick fixing.

  • Viridian Longbow - This was also suggested by UltimateRoxas40. Definitely a kind of cheeky include. I used to run it in an early version of my Prosper, Tome-Bound deck. The higher concentration of Deathtouch in this deck raises its ceiling. I don't play with equipment much beyond Skullclamp, Lightning Greaves, & Swiftfoot Boots, but might consider swapping one of the instant/sorcery removal spells depending on how first irl playthroughs go.

  • Academy Manufactor - I considered this for the deck initially, but it turns out it would be a non-bo with Vraska, the Silencer. Her wording reads "Whenever a nontoken creature an opponent controls dies, you may pay . If you do, return that card to the battlefield tapped under your control. It's a Treasure artifact" Manufactor only makes its plethora of tokens whenever an effect creates a Treasure, Food, or Clue token. Currently, Deadly Dispute, Tireless Provisioner, & Revel in Riches are my only cards that make treasure tokens.

  • Mastermind Plum - He has replaced Preacher of the Schism in a couple of my other decks already, so I guess I might as well continue the trend. I think I picked Preacher mostly because I have copies on hand, & my Mastermind Plum is already in another deck.

  • Infectious Bite - Forgot about this card & must have overlooked it in my initial brewing. Will likely swap out with Bite Down.

  • Bootleggers' Stash/Parallel Lives - Ehhhhh, I kinda like Revel in Riches as my awkward value 5 drop more than Bootlegger's Stash. I don't think I'd consider Parallel Lives for similar reasons listed as Academy Manufactor.

Regarding all the anti-token stuff you mentioned, I agree that Pernicious Deed is what I'm most likely to include. I had it in the initial draft of this deck, but swapped it for some other removal.

  • Liquimetal Torque - Definitely a case of "I know I have this on hand". I was also considering Fellwar Stone for this slot. As cool as Jet & Emerald Medallion are, I don't have a copy of either yet. I usually try to focus on what I have initially, then save stuff like the medallions for future upgrades if I like a deck enough to continue investing in it.

  • Kura, the Boundless Sky - I typically play against a Kangee, Sky Warden deck quite frequently in my meta. My friend that pilots the deck will frequently go after decks that don't have flying defenses up, & tends to avoid swinging at boards that will stop the flyers. So Kura is here to play mind games with him & deter aggro as a deathtouch flyer, but also is just a bigger body that can help soar over defenses & chip people for 4 damage until they can do something about it. Once he does die, I will pick the land option.

  • Saryth, the Viper's Fang - I feel like I tend to see 1-2 wipes per game, but much more targeted removal. Wipes are inevitable, so I don't really worry about them. I'd rather dissuade targeted removal, or at least speedbump folks by offering Saryth up as the bottleneck to the rest of my board without a wipe. If she is too redundant, this could be a potential swap out.

  • Questing Beast - I like it for being a haste-y body that also blocks well against aggro crack back. More importantly it helps negate the occasional Fog effect. Because of my main meta being more aggro, I'd rather have bodies on board than to a certain extent than a higher volume of kill spells. The deck started off with more instant & sorcery speed removal, but felt anemic for board presence.

  • Guardian Project - Don't think I've ever encountered anyone killing creatures in response to the trigger for denial. Maybe it's happened once or twice, but I don't think it's happened with any kind of consistency to make me worried about it.

  • As for the 3 X finishers, this is definitely another case of "I have these on hand". Most of the time Damnable Pact will be a draw spell for myself, but does have that corner case potential to finish off someone that's low enough. I've seen Exsanguinate enough in my meta, & if it hasn't acted as a finisher, it helps its caster stabilize enough to attrition everyone else out. I think I'd rather include Rise of the Dark Realms over Finale, mostly for budget purposes.

Thank you for the questions and suggestions! Definitely a fun thought exercise to get my day started.

I appreciate it Jacethemindsculptor1243, glad you got a kick out of it.

KBK7101, if you and/or the people you typically play with don't have any issues with proxies, maybe you can make your own "Universes Within" custom versions of some of the UB stuff so you can try them out.

April 18, 2024 2:12 p.m.

Also, you might want to add your No Universes Beyond disclaimer to your primer. I was about to suggest adding Danny Pink as a middle ground for draw and counter support.

April 18, 2024 11:59 a.m.

Your mana curve is looking chef's kiss.

Overall, looking more solid since I checked it out yesterday. If you feel like you're now leaning too heavily into the +1/+1 counters theme, it could be helpful to swap a couple of Counters related slots with some more draw like Night's Whisper, Plumb the Forbidden, or just draw slots that aren't dependent on your creatures connecting with combat damage.

Also, if you want to condense your Counter Support slots into quality vs quantity, Railway Brawler could also help in that regard.

April 18, 2024 11:38 a.m.

Sound like solid cuts to make, I was going to suggest cutting the Ninjutsu stuff. I checked out a bit of the Command Zone's Grand Larceny upgrade guide yesterday, and I think they suggested cutting the Ninjutsu stuff too lol.

Froghemoth is fun! I'm running it in my soon-to-be published Ognis, the Dragon's Lash deck. It's the current successor to my Prosper & Windgrace decks.

April 17, 2024 1:37 p.m.

Nice! Lol Ravenous Slime is one of those cards that each time I play it, it receives a "It does what?!" response from folks. If you play against aristocrats stuff fairly often, it can get out of hand.

You must have made the edits while I was typing up my suggestions. I kept CRTL+F searching to make sure I wasn't suggesting something you already were considering. We're on the same wavelength once again lol

April 17, 2024 11:55 a.m.

If you're looking to lean a bit more into +1/+1 counters, I think Managorger Hydra and Ravenous Slime could both be decent candidates. They balloon into threats on their own without much needed additional investment on your part from support cards, and both have built in evasion.

Champion of Lambholt could help open up evasion for your board to get those combat triggers, and Herald of Secret Streams could also help in this regard.

Said on Mr. Orfeo, the …...

Mr. Orfeo will only double the power of one target creature per combat.

If you have something like Roaming Throne, Isshin, Two Heavens as One, or Strionic Resonator in play, you could potentially get additional Orfeo triggers, and double the power of additional target creatures beyond the first.

Glad to see your Five-Boots list up like you mentioned! I'll definitely be keeping tabs on this as you make your changes and upgrades.

I checked out your Maybe List, and I'm glad to see that you have Spawnwrithe and Mist-Syndicate Naga; they were both some of my favorite "host bodies" for when I used to play Brokkos, Apex of Forever Mutate Voltron.

These are some cards I also used to run in Brokkos as host bodies, but I think they could do some work in Five-Boots, especially if you add in some of the Swords of X & Y, but check out Cephalid Constable and Needle Specter. Constable & Specter are much more immediately mean as hosts for Brokkos, but they could still be fairly disruptive with Five-Boots.

April 16, 2024 11:45 a.m. Edited.

As an additional example, Cold-Eyed Selkie is worded in a way so that you draw cards for the total amount of combat damage it deals.

Let's say Cold-Eyed Selkie is enchanted with a Rancor, and it connects for combat damage. If it connects with its full 3 damage, you will draw 3 cards.

Although their wordings have some similarities, their are some slight differences between "one or more" (Professional Face-Breaker, Grim Hireling, and Olivia, Opulent Outlaw), and "Whenever ~ deals combat damage to a player, X happens that many times" (Cephalid Constable, Cold-Eyed Selkie, and Needle Specter)

April 16, 2024 11:37 a.m.

Let's say you attack an opponent with 3 creatures and all of them deal combat damage. You may then pay 1 life for each of those creatures that dealt combat damage and draw a card for each one.

Inversely, if your opponents deal combat damage to another of your opponents, Gix will trigger and give them the option to also pay 1 life per each creature that dealt combat damage, then draw.

If Gix was worded "Whenever one or more creatures...deals combat damage" instead, like Professional Face-Breaker, you would instead only draw 1 card for each opponent you dealt combat damage to. The way Face-Breaker is worded, you can only make 1 Treasure token per each opponent dealt combat damage, regardless of how many creatures that connect with each opponent.

I caught your most recent comment in passing on the main comment feed, ShieldOfHolyShadows. I think you're very spot on in terms of the different mentality profiles for how people tend to respond to strategies like these.

I recently put together Nelly Borca, Impulsive Accuser on kind of a whim, and because stuff like Kardur, Karazikar, & Breena have all seen varying levels of success in my meta. For the most part, people enjoyed taking advantage of the draw, especially since my main playgroup leans very aggro. One of my friends deeply dislikes "being told what to do" by Goad strats, and guns for whoever plays them.

Either way, I've grown to enjoy the interactive aspect and mind games of piloting a deck like this one.

April 12, 2024 6:56 p.m.

Thanks for the solid suggestions UltimateRoxas40. Vraska Joins Up up was something I was considering as another draw source, but I wasn't sure how much I'd be swinging with Vraska, & the Legend count is kinda low.

I can't believe I forgot Viridian Longbow. I used to run it in my Prosper deck since he has deathtouch.

April 11, 2024 3:17 p.m.

Lol thank you ShadowTheMonk. Given recent lore implications, I wanted to do something fun with that.

I've had a lot of fun playing Party shenanigans with Burakos, Party Leader. I'm excited for future Typal batchings like Party and Outlaws, as I'm not the biggest fan of single creature Type Kindred/Typal decks.

Lol yeah when I was reading your Vihaan primer, that part about repurposing Prosper resonated with me.

Thanks again for checking out my Olivia deck. I like what you have brewed up with your Vihaan deck. I think it's kinda funny because I've been wanting to repurpose my Prosper deck for a while; I almost built Ognis, the Dragon's Lash lol.

Said on Is Anyone Else …...

"Now everybody is a Planeswalker, so now nobody is special."

In some of these adjacent discussions, I keep linking back to the upcoming "Death Race" set because I think its concept addresses something that current Omenpath stories haven't quite yet - Distance and time of travel. If an entire set is being based on the premise of a race across 3 planes, then that also sets up the premise that all Non-Planeswalkers have to travel long distances to get to and from the Omenpaths.

Sure, the Omenpaths now exist as a plot vehicle for all Non-Walkers, but there still is the implied off-screen distance and time that hasn't been yet addressed in-lore (as far as I know). What Planeswalkers can do instantaneously might take everyone else hours, days, maybe longer?

What seems to be an instantaneous Sparked Walkers like Jace could be an arduous journey for everyone else.

Idk, I know the Thunder Junction lore has received a fairly mixed reception for a variety of reasons, but I think the concept of inter-planar migration that it introduced (and races) to be a fun one that I hope gets expanded upon more in the Lore.
