X cost spells with Omniscience. Will it work?

Asked by Rainer_Riptide-Rider 9 years ago

So I just found Omniscience and Chord of Calling and I was wondering if Omniscience is already in play, can you basically summon any creature due to Omniscience and not have to pay Mana? And even more concerning, can a hydra be used in conjunction with Omniscience to create some kind of infinite growth depending on the hydra?

No you may not. From the card's Gatherer FAQ:

  • If the card has X in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as its value.

Basically whenever you cast a card "without paying it's mana cost" it only covers the exact value in the top-right corner; you cannot choose a value for X other than 0.

Greatsword Thank you once again. I really appreciate the help. The last thing I want is to casually be playing with friends and end up causing controversy over some small technicality.

Sure thing. As a rule though, always check a card's entry on the Wizard's http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Default.aspx database for frequently-asked rulings on a card. If you think a card is confusing, often times the answer will be in the card's entry under "rulings".

Note though - Omniscience is a may ability. If you've already played Omniscience and topdeck Chord of Calling or a Hydra, you can still choose to may their mana costs.
