Would Rain of Gore and Celestial Mantle kill a player?

Asked by Sniperops 9 years ago

Celestial Mantle causes a player to double their life total, but if that is gaining life, would they lose all their life instead?

Yes it would. Celestial Mantle (usually) causes the player to gain X life, where X is their life total. Rain of Gore replaces this life gain with life loss, making the player instead lose X life, probably putting the player at 0 life.

The actual math is the player's life total becomes 2X, and in order to do that the player gains or loses enough life to put the total at that number.

Always check the Gatherer rulings before asking a question.

10/1/2009: If a player's life total is doubled, that player actually gains or loses the necessary amount of life. For example, if the life total of the enchanted creature's controller is 14 when Celestial Mantle's triggered ability resolves, the ability causes that player to gain 14 life. Other cards that interact with life gain or life loss will interact with this effect accordingly.

Celestial Mantle's ability causes a player to gain life equal to his or her life total. Rain of Gore changes this to force that player to lose life equal to his or her life total.

Yes, Celestial Mantle's ability is considered to be gaining that amount of life. So Rain of Gore would instead cause the ability to take them to exactly 0.
