Would Glorious End make me lose the game if i have a Gideon of the Trials emblem?

Asked by Roboticwarrior 6 years ago

Ok. So say i have a Gideon of the Trials out and i've already put out his emblem. Then i play Glorious End on my opponents turn. Would i lose the game at the end of my next turn or would the gideon emblem save me?

The Emblem keeps you from losing. From the Gatherer

If Glorious Ends delayed triggered ability is countered, it wont trigger again. The same is true if its removed from the stack in any other way (such as by a second even more Glorious End) or if it resolves and you dont lose the game (perhaps because of the emblem of Gideon of the Trials).

One of the Golden Rules of Magic is that the "can't" always wins:

101.2. When a rule or effect allows or directs something to happen, and another effect states that it can't happen, the "can't" effect takes precedence.

Glorious End directs you to lose the game, but another effect says you can't lose the game, so the can't takes precedence and you don't lose the game.

An effect that says something can't happen wouldn't be very useful if it didn't prevent that thing from happening.

This is assuming you still control a Gideon planeswalker when the delayed trigger resolves. If they endstep Fiery Temper your Gideon in response to the delayed trigger of Glorious End then you lose. The important part is that you have to be unable to lose the game when the delayed trigger resolves, not when the spell does or when the delayed trigger triggers.
