Worldfire life totals in 2HG?

Asked by lobokael 8 years ago

Basically as it says. If I cast Worldfire, will the opposing team be at 1 life or will they be at 2. As there was a 2hg ruling regarding life totals and setting one person's. With that in mind, I would think it would be 2, as in 1 from opponent a and 1 from opponent b. I am hoping I am wrong and in setting each players, the team's total will be 1. Thanks a bunch for any assistance!!

The team's life total is set to 1. There is a rule in 2HG that says that, if a player's life total would be set to a specific value in a 2HG game, then the team's life total is set to that value instead.

Basically Worldfire will set opponent A's life total to 1, thus setting the opposing team's life total to 1. Then it will set opponent B's life total to 1, setting the opposing team's life total to 1 a second time, which won't do anything.

The same goes for your team obviously, as Worldfire is a symmetric effect. SO when the dust settles both teams will be at 1 life.

So the phrase 'each player' makes the life total interaction different than something like Sorin Markov targeting a single player?

The final result is the same though - the team's life total will be whatever the card is trying to set it to (10 for Sorin Markov, 1 for Worldfire).

Usually when something happens to "each player" it literally means each player (so if you activate Underworld Coinsmith opponent A will lose a life and opponent B will also lose a life, resulting in their team losing 2 life). However, in the case of Worldfire people are not losing or gaining life, rather their life total is set to a quantity. After you set a life total to 1 once, every successful attempt to set it to 1 won't accomplish anything as the life total is already where it needs to be (unless they gain some life. You get what I am saying).
