Will using the second ability of Oracle's Vault trigger Paradox Engine and untap it?

Asked by Pocketmouse 6 years ago

Someone showed me Oracle's Vault from the spoilers for amonkhet. The card's second ability states "Exile the top card of your library. Until end of turn you may play that card without paying it's mana cost. Activate this ability only if there are three or more brick counters on Oracle's Vault." If we activated this ability would it trigger Paradox Engine and untap all non-land permanents, thus making yet another infinite combo to play with Paradox Engine?

yes, bc you are casting it.

Not quite. Oracle's Vault won't trigger Paradox Engine, but it will let you play the card, which might trigger the engine. If you exile a spell you can't cast, like if you hit a Counterspell and there's nothing to counter, you won't be triggering the Paradox Engine. More likely, if you hit a land, that's not a spell so you won't trigger the engine. The combo is not infinite because it will break down somewhere. If nowhere else, when you're out of a library.

Neotrup is correct, though you CAN make the combo infinite by casting Mana Severance beforehand.

With any mana rock and a sensei's divining top it will only end when there is nothin g but land left becuase you can use Oracles vault to cast top after looking at the top three cards being land draw the land to top then vault to cast top look repeat

If we are talking about putting this combo in standard, The best way to make the combo work is to use cards such as Vizier of Tumbling Sands to untap Oracle's Vault whenever you hit a land on the top of your deck and try again. and if that fails you can cast a spell and untap Oracle's Vault with Paradox Engine. say you don't have enough mana to cast that spell? mana dorks. you tap them to cast a spell, they untap afterwards, refilling your supply. the combo could be infinite if you can get the pieces right.
