Will Hallow prevent Vulshok Sorcerer damage?
Asked by rwillians 10 years ago
I am casting Vulshok Sorcerer , but my opponent answers with Hallow targeting the Vulshok.
Damage with Vulshok Sorcerer will be prevented this turn?

@EddCrawley: that's partially incorrect.
Hallow can target any spell, regardless of whether it would actually deal damage or not. Additionally, when a spell is cast with an illegal initial target, the game is rewound to just before the casting process began. Only if all legal targets become illegal will a spell fizzle.
In this case, your opponent wasted a Hallow . Nothing happens to your creature.

The damage that would be dealt by the Vulshok Sorcerer
creature this turn is prevented. This is due to one of the exceptions to the rule about an object changing zones losing all relationship to what it was before:
400.7b Prevention effects that apply to damage from a permanent spell on the stack continue to apply to damage from the permanent that spell becomes.
For whatever reason the Gatherer page for Hallow
doesn't have a Rulings note about this. The following is from the Gatherer page for Shieldmage Elder
:
10/4/2004 - If the ability is activated targeting a spell that becomes a permanent, it also prevents any damage from that permanent this turn.

If that is right, it puts a 1 cmc common on equal par with a 3cmc rare Reverse Damage

Reverse Damage was never all that great, but being able to cast it against any source of damage makes it much more flexible than Hallow .

No, as the card you are casting isn't a spell that does damage, but a spell that brings a creature into play.
His spell would be countered as it does not have a legal target.
And even if your guy was already in play, he cannot prevent the damage as it is an activated ability, not a spell.
