Will a Mardu Charm prevent the Wincon from Hedron Alignment happening?

Asked by FatherLiir 8 years ago

If on my upkeep, I have a Hedron Alignment on the battlefield to reveal my hand which also has a Hedron Alignment and there is a Hedron Alignment in my graveyard and in exile does my opponent have time to cast instants before the win condition is satisfied;

for example, casting Mardu Charm to discard a noncreature, nonland card from my hand and chosing Hedron Alignment and undoing the necessary win conditions on the card OR Is it the win condition a state based action and instants cannot interrupt it?

Your opponent would have the opportunity to cast Mardu Charm in response to the upkeep ability, which triggers every upkeep regardless of whether you have all the pieces. In doing so, you would not have all the Hedrons in all the necessary zones to win.

However, he can NOT respond as soon as the ability has began resolving. He has to act before you decide whether you want to reveal your hand.

Yeah, basically the trigger checks whether you have aligned all the hedrons on resolution so if by the time it resolves you don't have the Hedron Alignment in your hand anymore you won't win the game. But the flipside is that you reveal your hand on resolution too, so once you have revealed it the rest of the trigger will resolve without an opportunity for your opponent to respond. Your opponent has to decide whether they are going to cast the charm before they can confirm whether you have the alignment or not.

On a similar note, you can also cast Dig Through Time or Anticipate with the trigger on the stack to find the last piece (and maybe delve the second-to-last into exile) before deciding whether to reveal or not.

Mardu Charm won't work since Hedron Alignment is Hexproof. One thing I can think of that a person can do is have Felidar Cub in their field so they can just use it's effect to remove it. Also, I don't know if there's a card that can give a creature flash, they can also use that with Felidar Cub then activate it's effect to remove Hedron Alignment.
