Wild Ricochet and cards where opponents make choices to target

Asked by DJSeras 8 years ago

If I were to play Volcanic Offering then before resolution cast Wild Ricochet would I get to choose new targets for what my opponent initially targeted?

I cannot find any definitive ruling on that interaction, but the Gatherer has a ruling for Wild Ricochet:

7/1/2013 The copy will have the same targets as the spell its copying unless you choose new ones. You may change any number of the targets, including all of them or none of them. If, for one of the targets, you cant choose a new legal target, then it remains unchanged (even if the current target is illegal).

Dissecting this ruling, I believe it's safe to assume that for each instance of the word "target", you may change those targets regardless of who chose said targets. The targets must remain legal, however, so it still must be targets that you don't control.

Cards do what they say, no more and no less. Wild Ricochet says you can choose new targets for the original spell and the copy, so that's what you do. It doesn't matter who chose the targets for the original spell.

Consider the situation where you're casting Wild Ricochet on an opponent's Rolling Thunder, etc. Your opponent chose all the targets for the original spell but Wild Ricochet doesn't also have them choose the new ones.
