Whirler rouge and evolve

Asked by jstack14 8 years ago

Here is an interaction that has come up for me in casual magic. I have a Cloudfin Raptor in play and i play a Whirler Rogue. If i understand correctly the rouge enters the battlefield and there are two simultaneous triggers, one from rouge saying put two 1/1's into play and one from raptor saying +1/+1 if p or t is less than Rogue. So i get to chose the order correct? So i put the evolve trigger on the stack, then the Rogue's trigger. Then the rouge's trigger resolves, i get 2 1/1's. Those trigger evolve twice as well. So i have on the top of the stack:

Evolve from a 1/1Evolve from a 1/1Evolve from a 2/2

As these resolve the first evolve adds a counter as my raptor is a 0/1, now a 1/2. The second 1/1 won't resolve because neither p or t is less than 1/1. The third will resolve because my raptor 1/2 is less than Rogue 2/2. So i end up with 2 thopters, a Rogue, and a 2/3 raptor. Is this correct?

Thanks!

Short answer is yes. Evolve decks are so much fun and technical lol!

Slightly more detailed:

Whirler Rogue enters, Cloudfin Raptor triggers at the same time as Whirler Rogue, so the controller of the triggers chooses what order the triggers are put on the stack (603.3b.) You put the Whirler Rogue trigger on top. Tokens enter, Cloudfin Raptor triggers two more times (since neither has resolved, and Evolve has an intervening "If" clause). The first trigger says "Yes, this creature is bigger than me, +1/+1 counter." The second says "No, this creature isn't bigger than me, stay the same." Now, the evolve trigger from the Whirler Rogue resolves. The trigger says, "Whirler Rogue is bigger than me, +1/+1 counter."
