When using Nature's Lore and Three Visits does the land enter the battlefield untapped?

Asked by Bassuma13 1 year ago

I'm in doubt about those cards. Nature's Lore and Three Visits have the same effect. "Search your library for a Forest card and put that card onto the battlefield., then shuffle your library." Does the Forest enter the battlefield untapped or tapped? I believe it enters untapped. However, on the Portuguese translation of those cards it says that the Forest enters tapped. I have an old version of Nature's Lore that does not say it enters tapped, but a new translation says it enters tapped. So, how is the Forest supposed to enter the battlefield?

Magic cards operate according to their Oracle text available at https://gatherer.wizards.com/
For Nature's Lore the most recent Portuguese printing says:

Card Name: Nature's Lore
Mana Cost:
Converted Mana Cost: 2
Types: Sorcery
Card Text: Search your library for a Forest card, put that card onto the battlefield, then shuffle.
Flavor Text: O druidismo é uma invocação simples dos espíritos da natureza, com a promessa de um vislumbre de seus segredos.
Expansion: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander
Rarity: Common
All Sets: Fifth Edition; Ice Age; Starter 1999; Portal; Portal Second Age; Masters Edition; Duel Decks: Garruk vs. Liliana; Vintage Masters; Duel Decks Anthology, Garruk vs. Liliana; Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Commander
Card Number: 164
Artist: Kim Sokol

You'll notice that for the Oracle, all the text except the Flavor Text is in English, which it true for all versions of all cards. That's the text that is followed when using the spell, even if the physical card is written in a different language, or says something different even in English. Since it does not direct you to put the Forest in tapped, it'll be untapped unless something else is causing it to enter tapped (such as Root Maze or the forest being Spara's Headquarters).

That's the beauty of those cards specifically, and one reason why they cost a bit more in real world $ than Farseek and Rampant Growth. Not only is it two mana, but like a mana rock that enters untapped you get another to spend that turn. Less known but also good is Skyshroud Claim. It costs four, but as long as you tutor forests they are both untapped, making if functionally a 2cmc spell the turn you cast it.
