When Naban is on the field. Is Psychic Corrosion triggered twice when Riverwise Augur enters the battlefield?

Asked by david1992aki 4 years ago

My current board state is Naban, Dean of Iteration and Psychic Corrosion

I cast Riverwise Augur , and it enters the battle field. Causing me to draw 3 cards.

Naban texts states: "If a Wizard entering the battlefield under your control causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time."

Therefore, I draw 3 cards on the first trigger. Then put 2 back. Making them mill 6. Then I draw 3 cards from Naban's trigger. Then put 2 back.

That's all fairly straight forward. However, when Riverwise enters to battle field, it causes Psychic Corrosion to trigger. So a wizard entering the battle field causes a permanent to trigger. So Naban would trigger Psychic Corrosion again?

Am I right in thinking that Psychic Corrosion triggers twice because of Riverwise, whilst Naban in on the field?

Riverwise Augur entering the battlefield is not causing the Psychic Corrosion to trigger. You drawing cards causes the trigger.

Psychic Corrosion triggers when you draw a card, not when a creature enters the battlefield. Riverwise Augur entering the battlefield doesn't trigger Psychic Corrosion , its ETB resolving does. This is important because if someone were to Stifle the Augur's ETB, Corrosion will never trigger.

Riverwise Augur does have an ETB ability and is a Wizard. Naban, Dean of Iteration sees a Wizard entering the battlefield that causes an ETB ability of a permanent you control (the Augur) to trigger, and thus causes that ability to trigger a second time.

Each Riverwise Augur trigger causes you to draw three cards, triggering Psychic Corrosion three times, milling six cards off of your opponent's library (putting two cards back doesn't matter in this case). Because Naban doubled the Augur trigger, you'll draw another three cards and mill another six off your opponent, for a total of 12 cards milled.

I had a feeling this would be the case. Is this the same with Drowned Secrets

Drowned Secrets triggers when you cast a blue spell. Naban, Dean of Iteration will not double that trigger when you cast Riverwise Augur because casting a blue spell is not the same thing as a Wizard entering the battlefield causing an ETB trigger to trigger. You would still get two Augur triggers because of Naban, but they do not interact with Drowned Secrets any differently than normal.
