When do I decide the mana color produced by Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient

Asked by doodkyle 2 years ago

If Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient attacks and triggers, and I'm able to add 5 mana to my mana pool, when do I decide what colors that 5 mana will be? Can I wait until later in my second main phase, or am I required to decide the colors as the ability resolves?

Yes, you do have to choose the colors when the ability resolves.

Lanzo493 do you happen to know any rules that apply here?

Since the mana is produced by the ability, you must choose the distribution of colors as part of its resolution. Similarly to how you can't cast Giant Growth in your first main phase and decide its targets in your second.

The only rule that applies here that’s special is that Klauth’s ability is not a mana ability. That means you can respond to it. For example, someone can kill your attackers and reduce how much mana you make, or if you have Pathbreaker Ibex attacking, you can resolve that ability first and make a lot more mana. There aren’t any specific rules for how to resolve the ability though. You just do what it says when it resolves. So you make the mana and choose the colors during the declare attackers step.

The main rule that applies here would be the following from the rules about how to resolve spells and abilities: "608.2c The controller of the spell or ability follows its instructions in the order written..." Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient's ability doesn't say the mana gets added to your pool in some later part of the turn, so that means you do it as the ability resolves. You have to choose the combination of colors at that time.
