When do ETB effects happen vs ETG effects with Genesis Wave?

Asked by keyno 9 years ago

Okay, here's the play. I have 2 cards left in my deck, one is Emrakul, the Aeons Torn the other is Wall of Blossoms . I've played Genesis Wave for 5 Mana, (with X as 2) and I choose to play the Wall of Blossoms .

When Wall of Blossoms hits the field, I would go to draw a card and, as there would be no cards in my deck,I would loose the game if it weren't for the fact that; When Emrakul, the Aeons Torn enters the graveyard, you shuffle your graveyard into your library.

Is this true? I've come to the conclusion that the Wall of Blossoms 's effect goes on the stack before the Emrakul, the Aeons Torn 's effect does, so the Emrakul happens first and shuffle's your library in before you draw. But if I'm wrong, then this scenario would loose me the game.

The answer is you could lose the game or not loose the game, depending on how you stack your triggers.

Both will trigger at the same time and since you control both triggers you can stack them however you want.

So if you have a Laboratory Maniac in play, then maybe you will want you Wall of Blossoms to resolve first. But in this case as you've written it,you probably want your Emrakul trigger to resolve first and then the Wall.

Both of the triggers happen during the resolution of Genesis Wave . Since triggers are placed on the stack only just before a player would receive priority both triggers wait for Genesis Wave to complete resolving at which point both will enter the stack simultaneously. As you control both triggers and as they would be put on the stack at the same time you can choose the order in which they enter the stack.
So if you choose to put Wall of Blossoms trigger on the stack first and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn trigger on top of that then Emrakul's trigger will resolve first shuffling your graveyard to your now empty library after which you'll draw a card from the newly refilled library. If you order the triggers the other way around you'll try to draw from an empty library and loose the game, unless of course you have the Laboratory Maniac on battlefield.

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks. Now, slightly different, let's say i'd used Genesis Wave for X of 15, and I played the Emrakul, the Aeons Torn as well as the Wall of Blossoms , but I already had another Emrakul on the field, would it be able to "sacrifice" itself to the graveyard (by the legendary rule) & shuffle my graveyard into my library in the same way?

Yes. Same reasons. Emrakul will come into play, State-based-actions will make you put one into the graveyard and then you'll have triggers to stack.
