when blocking a creature with trample with Souls of the Faultless when does your life gain take place?

Say a 30/30 Primordial Hydra is attacking. I have 10 life and block with a 0/4 Souls of the Faultless. Do I die before gaining 30 (or is it just 4) life?

If you had survived, it would be only 4 life gained. When a creature has trample, it only needs to assign lethal damage to any blocking creatures, which in this case would be only 4 damage with the rest of the 26 coming at you.

You will be dead before the triggered ability from Souls of the Faultless goes on the stack.

To make as clear as possible, if the Primordial Hydra was a 14/14, you would take 10 damage and lose the game, after Souls of the Faultless' ability triggered, but before the trigger was put on the stack (and long before the trigger would resolve).

Alternatively, if the Primordial Hydra was a 14/14 and you blocked with a Abzan Guide you would take 10 damage and gain 4 life, leaving you at 4 life without having to worry about anything triggering or having to use the stack.

If the Primordial Hydra had first strike and a lifelink blocker did not, you would lose the 10 life before gaining any life and would still lose. If the blocker had first strike and the hydra did not, you would gain the life before even taking the damage, and end up in a similar situation to the first lifelink example where you did not lose.
