What's the effect of casting a counterspell with Pyromancer Ascension?

Asked by BloodoftheBloodMoon 8 years ago

I've been playing a ur storm deck for quite some time, and I found this different version that played Cryptic Command and Remand I was just wondering what happens when I cast a counterspell with an active ascension. Do I get to choose different modes for the cryptic, would I get to draw two cards off remand? Or would the copy simply fizzle?

Here's the deck list . http://mtgtop8.com/event?e=10094&d=258167&f=MOApologies as I'm still not sure how to link a website to this page

Modes, like targets, costs, and all other variables, are declared as part of casting the spell. When you copy a spell you copy all of those and may only change them if the copy effect permits you to do so. Most copy effects, Pyromancer Ascension included, stipulates that you may change targets but since it doesn't say anything about modes you can't change modes.

Remand will only fizzle if it has no legal target when it resolves. If you target the same spell twice one of them will fizzle.

700.2g A copy of a modal spell or ability copies the mode(s) chosen for it. The controller of the copy cant choose a different mode. (See rule 706.10.)

A copied Cryptic Command will have the same attributes, including the modes chosen, as the original spell.

As for Remand, if both the original and the copy (via Pyromancer Ascension) are targeting the same spell, the copy will resolve first and you will draw a card. Then the original will try to resolve, see the spell it's targeting is no longer there, and it will fizzle. You will only draw one card.

Note: If you cast Cryptic Command for its 1st and 4th modes, and it got copied via the Ascension, the copy would resolve, countering a random spell (say Shock) and drawing you a card. Then the original will try to resolve. It will try to do everything it is supposed to do, so it will try to counter the same Shock and it will fail because Shock has already been countered, then it will let you draw a card because that is something the spell can still do.

As for linking an outside webpage:

(a href="URL HERE")What you want to call it here.(/a)
Replace all the "()" with "<>" respectively.

Which makes What you want to call it here.

I hate to sound like a broken record from about a week ago, but Raging_Squiggle's answer is correct all the way up until the note. If a spell has modes that target and modes that don't and all the targets from the modes that do become illegal then the entire spell fizzles. A ruling from cryptic command and the relevant rule that it is derived from:

6/7/2013: Look at both chosen modes to determine how many targets Cryptic Command has, if any. If it has at least one target, and all its targets are illegal when it tries to resolve, then it will be countered and none of its effects will happen. For example, if you choose the second and fourth modes, and the permanent is an illegal target when Cryptic Command tries to resolve, you won't draw a card.

608.2b If the spell or ability specifies targets, it checks whether the targets are still legal. A target thats no longer in the zone it was in when it was targeted is illegal. Other changes to the game state may cause a target to no longer be legal; for example, its characteristics may have changed or an effect may have changed the text of the spell. If the source of an ability has left the zone it was in, its last known information is used during this process. The spell or ability is countered if all its targets, for every instance of the word target, are now illegal.
