What is different about legendary tokens?

Asked by Gothomas 8 years ago

I have Tolsimir Wolfblood in my populate deck and i was confused if the legendary wolf tokens have some drawback? They can be treated just like any other token in terms of populate and token buffs right?

A legendary token is still a legendary permanent and must follow the legend rule. You can populate it as it is a token, but when two or more legendary permanents with the same name exist on the battlefield under the same controller, that player chooses one of them and puts the rest into their graveyard (they get exiled rather since tokens can't exist in the graveyard).

704.5k If a player controls two or more legendary permanents with the same name, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners graveyards. This is called the legend rule.

Other than that, legendary tokens are still tokens and can receive buffs from cards like Intangible Virtue and Emmara Tandris.

You could still make a copy using populate but they are legendary. Just like all permanents with the legendary supertype the follow the legendary rule.

205.4d Any permanent with the supertype legendary is subject to the state-based action for legendary permanents, also called the legend rule (see rule 704.5k)

Therefore only one of Tolsimir's tokens can be in play at one time on each side of the battlefield.

704.5k If a player controls two or more legendary permanents with the same name, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners graveyards. This is called the legend rule.

Other than that they behave just like any other token. So yes they could be hurt by things like Illness in the Ranks or buffed by Intangible Virtue.

You can check out rules 110.5a-g for the full rules on tokens. If you have any other questions about them.

@dragonstryke58: Tokens cease to exist as a state-based action if they are in a zone other than the battlefield, but they still go to that zone. There is no rule that exiles tokens if they would die. Tokens cannot remain in exile just as they cannot remain in a graveyard.
