What happens with a madness trigger?

Asked by Krhaynes1 8 years ago

Okay so I'm really looking forward to Shadows Over Innistrad, and I like the combo of Lightning Axe and discard Fiery Temper (both are being reprinted). I know Fiery Temper will go to exile briefly for the madness ability. If I pay the madness cost does Fiery Temper go to my graveyard or back to exile?

702.34a Madness is a keyword that represents two abilities. The first is a static ability that functions while the card with madness is in a players hand. The second is a triggered ability that functions when the first ability is applied. Madness [cost] means If a player would discard this card, that player discards it, but may exile it instead of putting it into his or her graveyard and When this card is exiled this way, its owner may cast it by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost. If that player doesnt, he or she puts this card into his or her graveyard.

If you cast the card from exile, it goes on top of the stack, like a normal spell. When it is done resolving, it is put into your graveyard from the stack, like a normal nonpermanent spell.

Basically if you decide to cast the spell, from that point forward it behaves like any other spell you could have normally cast from your hand. When it leaves the stack it goes wherever spells of that type go when they are done resolving - A creature like Basking Rootwalla would enter the battlefield, an instant like Fiery Temper would go to the graveyard.
