What happens when I Ensoul Artifact a Cranial Plating?

Asked by TheAnnihilator 8 years ago

So, say I casted Ensoul Artifact on a Cranial Plating... Can the Cranial still be equipped? Can I attack with it even when it is equipped to a creature?

The instant any non-creature equipment becomes a creature, it unequips itself from the creature it's attached to. See the rulings for March of the Machines.

12/1/2004 If an Equipment becomes a creature, it can no longer equip a creature. If it's currently attached to a creature, it becomes unattached (but remains on the battlefield). You can activate the Equipment's equip ability, but it won't do anything.

Cranial Plating can attack as a creature, but it cannot be equipped to a creature.

Creatures can't be attached to anything. An equipment or an aura that's somehow also a creature can't be attached to another creature and will fall off of any creature that it's currently attached to.

In addition, here is a ruling for Ensoul Artifact itself:

7/18/2014 The artifact retains any types, subtypes, or supertypes it has. Notably, if an Equipment becomes an artifact creature, it cant be attached to another creature. If it was attached to a creature, it becomes unattached.

Note also that Cranial Plating does not confer its +1/+0 effect to itself if you animate it.
