What happens when a copy is countered?

Asked by Delphen7 3 years ago

Assuming I've cast my commander once, say I cast any spell, like Regrowth . Then I cast something like Fury Storm , with the original targeting Regrowth, and the copy targeting the original Fury Storm. What would happen (assuming nothing has resolved yet) if:

  • Regrowth is countered. Will the original Fury Storm fizzle before the copy can copy it? Will Fury Storm fizzle at all?
  • The original Fury Storm is countered. Will the copy fizzle?
  • Can the copy be countered?

A spell fizzles when it tries to resolve, so the copy will still be able to copy the original. However, it's too late to add a new spell to the stack to be copied, so with Regrowth gone your not going to get any benefit, aside from mage craft triggers.

Yes, if Fury Storm is countered the copy targeting it will fizzle. Unless your trying to get mage craft triggers, the copies should just target what you want to copy in the first place.

Copies are spells and cane be countered normally. In addition the ability that makes the copies can be Stifle d
