What happens if Skyclave apparition re-enters the battlefield before it's first trigger resolves.

Asked by AgileFlame 3 years ago

In a situation where I play a Skyclave Apparition and target a 2 CMC creature (for example) with it's ability, but before the trigger resolves I cast Ephemerate targeting the Skyclave Apparition and it re-enters the battlefield with the second trigger targeting a 3 CMC creature (for example).

Would the 2 CMC creature be exiled under the Skyclave Apparition as well as the 3 CMC creature? And the next time it leaves the battlefield the opponent gets a 2/2 and a 3/3 token?

The Skyclave Apparition exiled by Ephemerate and the one returned by it are completely different creatures with no relation to eachother, even though they are represented by the same card:
(Ruling for Ephemerate)
6/14/2019 Once the exiled creature returns, it's considered a new object with no relation to the object that it was. Auras attached to the exiled creature will be put into their owners' graveyards. Equipment attached to the exiled creature will become unattached and remain on the battlefield. Any counters on the exiled creature will cease to exist.

As a result, this means the first Skyclave Apparition left the battlefield before it's first ability resolved, so the opponent doesn't get any token, but their creature still get's exiled:
(Rulings from Skyclave Apparition)
9/25/2020 If Skyclave Apparition leaves the battlefield before its first ability resolves, the ability still exiles the target permanent.
9/25/2020 If there's no exiled card when Skyclave Apparition leaves the battlefield (most likely because its first ability hasn't resolved yet), no player creates a token.

Because the 2 CMC creature is exiled by a Skyclave Apparition that no longer exists, the token will never be created, but when Skyclave Apparition does leave, they will still get the 3/3.
