What does Cathar's Crusade trigger on first if I have Edgar Markov as my commander?

Asked by EDHking01 6 years ago

Let's say I have a Cathars' Crusade on the battlefield, and my commander is Edgar Markov. If my Vampire Hexmage (or any other vampire) enters the battlefield, does the Vampire Hexmage enter first or the vampire token created by Edgar Markov? And what does the Cathars' Crusade's ability trigger on?

Edgar Markov is a cast trigger, so the creature will not be on the battlefield. So, for your scenario, When you cast Vampire Hexmage, Edgar Markov will create a 1/1 vampire, of which Cathars' Crusade will trigger and all of your creatures will get a +1/+1 counter. Then, Vampire Hexmage will enter the battlefield, which will then trigger Cathars' Crusade again, of which all of your creatures will get another +1/+1 counter.

The key thing to note is that Edgar Markov's ability triggers when you first cast the spell and Cathars' Crusade triggers when a creature actually enters the battlefield. In your example:

  • You cast Vampire Hexmage and Edgar triggers
  • Edgar's ability creates a token and Cathar's Crusade triggers
  • The Crusade hands out counters
  • Vampire Hexmage finally resolves and enters the battlefield, triggering Crusade again
  • Crusade hands out counters

The token is created off a cast trigger, so it will resolve before the creature enters. Cathars' Crusade will trigger giving a counter to the token, then the spell will resolve triggering the crusade again, resulting in a 3/3 vampire and a single +1/+1 counter on the real creature.
