What classifies as a permanent?

Asked by AdwinBalkar 2 years ago

So I saw a card that stated "As long as player controls 2 white permanents" and I'm just needing clarification on what constitutes as a permanent. I know its kind of a stupid question. I just can't remember what I had been told

A permanent is a creature, artifact, planeswalker, land, or enchantment on the battlefield.

(they are permanent spells while on the stack, and permanent cards while in your library or on the battlefield (if they're non tokens)).

Basically anything that isn't an instant or sorcery.

Sorry, library/hand/exile/etc... they exist as permanent cards.

But just as 'permanent' they need to be on the battlefield.

Yeah, the simplest test is whether something goes on the battlefield or not. If it goes onto the battlefield when you play it, it's a permanent.

Note, though, that lands are colorless, so Plains cards are not "white permanents" even though they are permanents and tap for . In general, white permanents are creatures, enchantments, or planeswalkers with in their mana costs. Artifacts are usually colorless but some, like Maul of the Skyclaves , would also count.

110.1. A permanent is a card or token on the battlefield. A permanent remains on the battlefield indefinitely. A card or token becomes a permanent as it enters the battlefield and it stops being a permanent as it’s moved to another zone by an effect or rule.

This is the rules definition of a Permanent. If it's on the battlefield, it's a permanent. Cards elsewhere may be "Permanent Cards", or "Permanent Spells", but they are not "Permanents". As previously stated, lands are colorless, with only a single exception that's ever been printed.
