Uvilda, Dean of Perfection and Mindswipe

Asked by 9-lives 1 year ago

If i cast Uvilda, Dean of Perfection  Flip and exile Mindswipe, will it make it 4 mana cheaper, which literally means 4 mana more for Mindswipe?! This means that if I pay the cost of Mindswipe, and pay only one mana for its X cost, will it count as paying five mana for its X cost in MV if using Uvilda, Dean of Perfection  Flip on Mindswipe?

Yes, basically. This 4 cmc discount is on Generic mana only, so you'll have to pay the blue and red with lands or rocks (so you ave to pay two), but you'll begin with X=4 even if you only pay , and of course everything else you put in will count too.

There's a problem with this example. Mindswipe can't be cast if there isn't another spell on the stack for it to target. When the last hone counter is removed from the exiled card, you have to choose whether to cast the spell right then or not at all. You don't get a choice to wait to cast it later. It's extremely difficult to construct a situation where the last hone counter comes off while there's somehow another spell on the stack (I feel like it's impossible, but I'm not 100% certain given some of the odd cards out there). For an example where we don't have this issue like Blaze, yes, it works as Guerric describes above.

That is a valid point! Counterspells do need a target, so Mindswipe wouldn't do anything in this case. I'm not actually sure why it would be helpful to even cast it without a target unless you were going for some sort of storm counter or something. So while the discounting is correct, the example doesn't and so something like Blaze would be a better example.
