using Flicker on tokens

Asked by abenz419 9 years ago

Tokens cease to exist when in any other zone other than the battlefield. Is this done as a SBA? If it is, does that mean you can use something like Momentary Blink on a token, because it'll return the creature before the spell is finished resolving, therefor it'll be on the battlefield the next time SBA's are checked.

Nope, sorry. In addition to disappearing when SBAs are checked, tokens just can't return to the battlefield.

110.5g A token that has left the battlefield cant move to another zone or come back onto the battlefield. If such a token would change zones, it remains in its current zone instead. It ceases to exist the next time state-based actions are checked; see rule 704.

So you know: there was a period of time before Rule 110.5g was introduced when your original idea for the trick worked, but it caused a lot of confusion and many arguments among players (and even some judges!) when it started showing up in high-level tournament play. The new Rule was added to make the interaction happen in what was the intended and most intuitive way.

Also, a lot of flicker cards have built in doesn't work on tokens, for example, Cloudshift says "return that card to the battlefield" and tokens are NOT cards according to the game rules.

Ahh ok, thanks guys. The rule about tokens ceasing to exist if they're in any zone other than the battlefield when SBA's are checked gets brought up quite a bit, but I've never heard the other rule.
