Teferi's Puzzle Box With Additional Draw Triggers

Asked by C4rnif3X 6 years ago

So I have question I can't really find anywhere.. I understand you draw your normal card per turn before Teferi's Puzzle Box triggers because of the state based actions.

I'm confused about if additonal draw effects happen before Teferi's Box triggers as well? For instance, let's say I flash in Dictate of Kruphix before my next turn, and I have Teferi's Puzzle Box in play already.

Looking at the oracle text of Teferi's Puzzle Box, the wording becomes more clear: "At the beginning of each player's draw step, that player [...]" So the box is actually triggering at the same time as something like Dictate of Kruphix would. This rule explains how those triggers are ordered:

"603.3b If multiple abilities have triggered since the last time a player received priority, each player, in APNAP order, puts triggered abilities he or she controls on the stack in any order he or she chooses."

If you control both Teferi's Puzzle Box and Dictate of Kruphix at your draw step, you choose the order in which those triggers are put on the stack and thus in which order they will resolve. If you control Teferi's Puzzle Box and an opponent controls Dictate of Kruphix at your draw step, the box will be put on the stack first, followed by the dictate, and they will resolve in the reverse order. If you control Dictate of Kruphix and an opponent controls Teferi's Puzzle Box at your draw step, the dictate will be put on the stack first, followed by the box, and they will resolve in the reverse order. Finally, if an opponent controls both permanents, they will get to choose the order of the stack.

At least, this is how I understand this interaction.

Thanks for your input TheVectornaut

That's actually exactly how I understand it as well.. Since you have priority, if you own both, you can order your triggers just like anything else.

TheVectornaut- Such a strong answer until the end bit where you doubted yourself. Don't worry, if you are wrong people will correct you. No need to doubt yourself and have people asking questions doubt you. You explained it exactly correctly.

Unless I'm absolutely sure of something, I try to suggest my fallibility to allow for second opinions. If I answer a question in absolute terms and the OP immediately accepts that answer, it seems to me that it would be much less likely for others to view the question and offer their input. Then, if my answer was wrong for whatever reason, the chances of correction would be diminished. Maybe I'm just underestimating the number of people looking through questions that already have an accepted answer since I rarely do so myself.

Yeah you are underestimating the number of people that look through questions with accepted answers. I know for a fact that like 5 or 6 of the usual suspects on the Q&A look through every single question we have not yet viewed regardless of if it has an accepted answer or not.
