Tainted Remedy and Lifelink
Asked by sergiodelrio 8 years ago
The new origins Card "Tainted Remedy" (If an opponent would gain life, that player loses that much life instead.) is very similar to Rain of Gore. Lifelink on the opponents' creatures does not trigger Rain of Gore. Does it trigger Tainted Remedy though?
Yes, in this case Tainted Remedy would cause your opponent to take damage from the life they gain off creatures with life link.
The reason it doesn't work that way with Rain of Gore is because it sates that it only prevents life gain off "spells and abilities". This typically refers to an object on the stack, and life link doesn't actually "trigger" or place anything on the stack.
EDIT: ninja'd

Wait, is Beacon of Immortality is an insta-win with Tainted Remedy?

Yes. Also a one-shot kill with Rain of Gore.
This is another interaction and should probably be its own question.

Not true about Rain of Gore, since it is inherent to the controller of the spell or ability. Thus, you will be able to kill yourself with Beacon if you target yourself with Rain out, or if the opponent casts Beacon on themselves with Rain out, only then will suicide themselves.
However, Tainted Remedy works well with Beacon.

You are right, I didn't notice the clause about Rain of Gore caring about the controller of the spell.
I guess Rain of Gore was in the same standard as Grove of the Burnwillows and you probably didn't want that interaction to make your land into a pinger that makes mana :)

We're discussing this in a thread in the spoiler forum. I've tried to break Rain of Gore before, also considering the interaction with Beacon of Immortality, but the rules prevented any shenanigans. Now that we have Tainted Remedy, I want to make a new attempt. THAT combo is legit... but probably not viable. Check out the thread here.

I was just playing the origins MTG game on my phone, lifelink didn't trigger the life loss on my opponent when they attacked and I had tainted remedy in play. They still gained the life. Is this by design or is it just bug? Just thought I'd share

Yes. Your opponent is, after all, trying to gain life, and that falls under the replacement effect Tainted Remedy creates.
Note that both Rain of Gore and Tainted Remedy are replacement effects and they don't "trigger" per se.
