Summoning sickness????!

Asked by Segala 6 years ago

Probably one of the most basic ruling in mtg but I'm ont able to find a clear anwser to my question so I'll try here.

What does summoning sicknes implies ? Is it just about preventing creatures to attack when summoned or does it do something else ?

Ex: Can I tap the creature to crew a vehicle ? Can I tap Sylvan Caryatid or Selvala, Explorer Returned for their abilities cost when they are summoning sickness? Can I tap a creature under summoning sickness for the cost of another card ability like Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca or to crew.

I was also wondering where i could find these type of anwsers

Thanks

You cannot activate abilities requiring a creature to tap or attack with a creature unless it has haste.

Let's look at Prodigal Sorcerer.

The turn he enters the battlefield, you cannot attack with him.

The turn he enters the battlefield, you cannot use his ability, since it would require you to tap him.

Now, let's compare with Oona, Queen of the Fae. Her ability does not require you to tap her--as such, you can activate the ability the turn she enters the battlefield.

Regarding vehicles and Kumena--yes, you can tap a summoning sick creature to crew a vehicle. Think of it this way--summoning sickness only affects a creature's ability to tap itself. Vehicles or cards like Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca are the ones causing the creature to become tapped--not the sick creature.

Rule 302.6:

A creatures activated ability with the tap symbol or the untap symbol in its activation cost cant be activated unless the creature has been under its controllers control continuously since his or her most recent turn began. A creature cant attack unless it has been under its controllers control continuously since his or her most recent turn began. This rule is informally called the summoning sickness rule.

A slight clarification regarding activating abilities:
Summoning sickness means you can't tap a creature to activate one of its abilities with the tap symbol () in its cost. Abilities that say "tap an untapped creature" can still be activated. That's why crew works. You can even tap Heritage Druid for its own ability while it has summoning sickness.
