Sudden spoiling confusion

Asked by Banwar 9 years ago

In a recent EDH game this scenario happened: One opponent attacked another opponent who had a Bruna, Light of Alabaster , and a Celestial Archon equipped with a Darksteel Plate untapped. He declared both as a blockers and attached to Bruna Indestructibility , Drake Umbra , Ethereal Armor . At the end of the declare blockers step the other opponent cast Sudden Spoiling and a debate ensued concerning whether the abilities granted by the plate and the enchantments were removed or not and what the P/T of Bruna was.

I've tried to look into some rulings but find it all very confusing.

All ability adding/removing effects are applied in layer 6 of the layer system. Therefore, you use timestamp order (the "age" of the effects) to determine which effect has precedence.

Because Sudden Spoiling was cast after all of the Auras and equipment were attached to their respective creatures, Sudden Spoiling has the newest timestamp. Therefore, it will be applied last and will remove the abilities granted by the equipment/Auras.

Bruna, Light of Alabaster would still be a 12/12 because the P/T-modifying abilities are on the Auras, not the creature, and they still apply.

Wouldn't Bruna, Light of Alabaster be a 7/9? Sudden Spoiling Making her 0/2 and then getting +3/+3 from the Drake Umbra and +4/+4 from the Ethereal Armor ?

Right, right. I totally forgot that Sudden Spoiling had a P/T set attached to it. Good catch.
