Strionic Resonator + Fiend Hunter

Asked by Battlecry1986 9 years ago

My question is simple.

If I cast Fiend Hunter and copy the ETB withStrionic Resonator can the copied effect target the Fiend Hunter ?

I understand that normally Fiend Hunter can not target itself because of the "another target creature" clause, but does the 2nd trigger off of the Strionic Resonator act as if it is coming from anther Fiend Hunter , allowing you to target the original?

I had hoped to use to the following effect...
Cast Fiend Hunter : target opponents creature for exile, then before this effect resolves, copy the ability with Strionic Resonator : this time targeting the Fiend Hunter .

The copied ability off of the Strionic Resonator would resolve 1st, exiling and then returning the Fiend Hunter , this should trigger both his ETB and the LTB abilities. BUT because the original target hasn't yet been exiled the LTB would have no effect.

I would then target a new opponents creature to be exiled. Then that creature would be exiled, followed by an exile of the original target. My though is that because the current Fiend Hunter in play is not considered the same as the one that exiled the original target, the original target should not be returned if the Fiend Hunter in play dies.

The copied ability created by Strionic Resonator still has the same source as the original ability. This is clarified in one of the rulings notes given on Resonator's Gatherer page. In your example, the copy of Fiend Hunter 's ability can't target that Fiend Hunter.

As Rhad mentioned, you should always check the Gatherer rulings before asking a question. Most of them are written specifically to answer common questions or clarify mechanics.
