Stifle countering Glen Elendra Archmage

Asked by metalmustaine 8 years ago

What if Stiflewas used to counter Glen Elendra Archmage ability, can I use the archmage ability again to counter stifle?

No. Sacrificing the archmage is part of the cost for countering a non-creature spell.

Scenario:
1) Activate Glen Elendra Archmage's ability, sacrificing her as part of the cost, targeting a legal spell (Let's say Lightning Bolt). Persist immediately triggers and goes on the stack above her activated ability.

2) Your opponent responds to the persist trigger and casts Stifle targeting the Archmage's activated ability that targets Lightning Bolt.

Note: You cannot respond by sacrificing her again because she is still in the graveyard, waiting for her persist ability to resolve.

3) Stifle will resolve, countering your activated ability. Priority passes and Persist resolves, returning Glen Elendra Archmage to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter.

4) You can, however, respond to the original spell, (still the Lightning Bolt), by activating her ability a second time, targeting the same spell before it ever gets a chance to resolve.

Will this Stack work:
1. Opponent casts Counterspell
2. i respond with Glen Elendra Archmage ability
3. Opponent casts Stifle on archmage
4. I cast Otherworldly Journey on archmage

So what is being countered here? The persist or the counter ability? That might help us make better sense of this situation.

As it stands now, that scenario won't work. You sacrifice Glen Elendra Archmage as part of the cost to activate its ability. Persist then triggers and goes onto the stack above the counter ability. Therefore, if your opponent responds at that point with Stifle, Glen Elendra Archmage won't be on the field for you to target with Otherworldly Journey.
