Stack Question - Can I Move a Card Between Zones and Have Abilities Targeting It Resolve?

Asked by LordNorm1 6 years ago

Sorry for the poorly-phrased question, I'm just not sure how to title it better.

If I have Pharika, God of Affliction and use her ability targeting a creature in my graveyard, but in response to the ability move it somewhere else with for example a Faith's Reward, would that fizzle the ability? Or would I end up with a bonus snake and nothing in exile? If that wouldn't happen due to the wording of Pharika's ability, what wording would it have to be to be able to manipulate the stack like this?

When a spell or ability goes to resolve, if all of its targets are no longer legal, the entire spell/ability is countered. When Pharika's ability tries to resolve, if its single target (the card in the graveyard you targeted) is no longer legal (perhaps because it's not there anymore), then the whole ability is countered. No snake will be created.

The way they would have needed to phrase the ability to allow you to get the snake even if the card doesn't get exiled is "Exile target creature card from target player's graveyard. That player creates a 1/1 black and green Snake enchantment creature with deathtouch." As for a wording that allows you to exile the creature if it changes zones? I don't believe the rules allow that with any wording.
