Sphinx's Tutelage wording. Is it per card draw or just in general when you draw?

Asked by Pheardemons 8 years ago

Sphinx's Tutelage says whenever you draw a card your opponent puts the top two cards of his or her library in the graveyard. Based on the wording, does that mean it is per card drawn? (for example: Visions of Beyond allows for three cards. Does that mean there will be three triggers put on the stack? Or just one because cards were drawn but it doesn't count the number?)

In case anyone wants to know Gatherer didn't answer this and I didn't see any similar questions in the links.

The ability triggers per card drawn. If you draw three cards, that's three instances of drawing a card and therefore three triggers.

You are correct. It will trigger once for each instance of a card drawn. Here is a ruling from Consecrated Sphinx which has a similar ability that triggers from a card being drawn.

6/1/2011 The ability triggers once for each card an opponent draws. You choose whether to draw two cards as each of those abilities resolves.

Note: If you cast something like Vision Skeins, you will draw 2 cards. The Sphinx's Tutelage will trigger 2 times (Once for each card you drew), but won't go on the stack until the Vision Skeins has fully resolved.
