Speed of Black lotus

Black Lotus good card? Yes, undeniably. However I'm kind of confused on something. I don't know how to link a card via link to the rest of ther internet. In the Unlimited version of Black Lotus, it sounds like it could be played out of hand, "and then discarded". I know that the newest printing doesn't specify with the ability flash. Someone help me out here, and correct me if I'm wrong.

The first several versions of the game rules and templating conventions for card text weren't as clean and uniform as they are now. Always check the current Oracle text of an old card with weird text to see what it's actually supposed to say.
