Soulfire Grand Master dies while damage spell is still on stack

Asked by nismosean 9 years ago

Player A has Soulfire Grand Master on the battlefield. They cast Searing Blood on Player B's Elvish Mystic. Then Player B responds by casting Reality Shift on the Soulfire Grand Master.

Will the Searing Blood resolve with lifelink or does it lose lifelink since the Soulfire Grand Master was removed before the spell resolved?

It loses lifelink.

Soulfire Grand Master's ability states, "Instant and sorcery spells you control have lifelink." This is a static ability that functions only while Soulfire Grand Master is on the battlefield.

If Soulfire Grand Master's ability instead read "Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, it gains lifelink," then it wouldn't matter whether Soulfire Grand Master remained on the battlefield for the resolution.

The things on the stack go in opposite order in the way they were cast. So Reality Shift would resolve first because it is on top of the stack, and then Searing Blood. So no lifelink.
