Solemnity question v2

Asked by TMBRLZ 6 years ago

So as I was reading the last q&a about this card, a second question popped to mind that I figured deserved a separate page.

Solemnity says can't be "put" on x, y, z.

So would this also affect cards that say "enters the battlefield with x generic counter type: ???

I guess it's more of a discussion rather than a cut and dry as I do not yet see any official rule remarks on the card.

Examples of the aforementioned situation would be cards like:

There's also cards to consider like Afiya Grove who enter with counters and then can move those counters.

That is not by definitive wording "putting" them anywhere... so what say you all?

I should clarify the Oracle for Afiya says "move" despite the original wording.

Entering the battlefield with counters is considered "putting" them for the purposes of effects that care about such things, and the process of moving a counter involves removing it from one thing and putting it on another.

121.5. If an effect says to "move" a counter, it means to take that counter from the object it's currently on and put it onto a second object. If the first and second objects are the same object, nothing happens. If the first object has no counters, nothing happens; the second object doesn't get a counter put on it. If the second object (or any possible second objects) is no longer in the correct zone when the effect would move the counter, nothing happens; a counter isn't removed from the first object.

121.6. Some spells and abilities refer to counters being put on an object. This refers to putting counters on that object while it's on the battlefield and also to an object that's given counters as it enters the battlefield.

Well then. So much for Wizards being all literal.

It used to be slightly worse before the release of Amonkhet. Effects and rules would use the words "put" and "place" to refer to the exact same action without explicitly stating they were equivalent terms.

How does Solemnity work with cumulative upkeep?

It works great. Age counters can't be put on the permanent, so the cost never increases. If it never gets any counters at all then no cost has to be paid.

Also, it's better to ask new questions in a new question topic to make it easier for other users to see. With the way this section of the site works, posting in an old topic doesn't set it back to the top of the list. The only people who will know about your post in an old topic are other users who have already posted in it and are still receiving notifications for it.
