Shalai, Voice of Plenty in a red/white EDH

Asked by ArachnidGoat 5 years ago

If I'm using Shalai, Voice of Plenty in a commander deck, not as the commander, Does commander need to be White and Green for me to be able to even have it in the deck?

I just recently made a Angel Red/White EDH deck, and have Gisela, Blade of Goldnight as the commander. Obviously have lands that can produce any color of mana too, so can Shalai, Voice of Plenty even be in the deck because its activated ability requires a green mana?

I know simply that if a cards mana coloring doesnt match the commander it can not be in the deck, but does that include cards with additional colored abilities? Otherwise i need to reconsider adding a red/white/green commander, and adding some green stuff, or just remove it. I like its ability, and activated ability.

Sadly, no, this won't work. "Color identity" does also include the symbols printed in the rules text of abilities, so that means Shalai's identity is G/W. You can't include her in a R/W commander deck.

In EDH, a deck is based off of its Commander's color identity, but each card in the deck must also fit within that color identity. Shalai, Voice of Plenty's color identity is WG, so she can't go in an EDH deck that isn't both white and green.

To add one additional point, that's not really relevant in the present case, but is worth knowing - mana symbols in reminder text, which are currently only found on cards with Extort do not count toward color identity, even though they are mana symbols on the card. I know that is not really responsive, but I was going to post some boring administrative things here anyway, and figured I'd at least finish out the definition of color identity.

Anyway, onto the dull admin stuff:

In the future, please be sure to hit the "Mark as Answer" button appearing next to each responsive post when your question is resolved. This helps keep the Rules Q&A section clutter-free and helps future users quickly identify the correct answer.

As this has been answered for a couple days, I have gone ahead and marked an answer as accepted. If you could try to remember to do this in the future, that would be appreciated.
