Seasoned Hallowblade

Asked by AjMcGamer 3 years ago

No sure how I've gone this long without facing a Seasoned Hallowblade but I have a major problem with it.

Its text clearly states that yo gain indestructible one must, discard a card, and tap seasoned hallowblade.

How is it that my opponent was able to activate it while the hallowblade was already tapped from attacking during his turn.

Am I reading the ability wrong?

Easy: The tapping is part of the resolution of the ability. It's not a cost, so it doesn't matter if the creature is tapped. You can recognize by looking at the ":". Everything left from it is part of the cost, everything right from it is the ability that is put on the stack.

First time this happened to me (and every time I face him, actually) this infuriated me. I am no judge, and I hate that this happens, but this seems to hinge around the colon. "Discard a card" triggars the ability. The ability is then "Tap Seasoned Hallowblade" (if he's not already tapped :( ), then he becomes indestructible (anyway).

Tapping isn't part of the cost, it's part of the effect. Since it was already tapped and attacking, with only discarding a card as the cost, the creature is still attacking

You would want to use removal pre-combat to avoid this issue. Or if you're attacking and don't want it to block, try to remove before declare blockers step

Edit: ninja'd!

Ahh ok thanks, I did read the tapping as part of the cost, that makes sense though.
