Scrap Trawler, Pia's Revolution and artifact board wipes

Asked by RainbowDevil 6 years ago

What would happen if I had a Scrap Trawler and someone used a board wipe card, such as Boompile? Hopefully I would also have Pia's Revolution in play as well. Would you go down the board, removing one at a time? So, you get to the first artifact - the opponent can pay 3 life to have it removed (because of Pia's Revolution, in which case the card: Scrap Trawler]] just returns a cheaper card.Keep doing this until you've gone through all the cards, then finally remove Scrap Trawler and Pia's Revolution? If this were the case, then all board wipes would be almost useless for artifacts if one had a Scrap Trawler.

Or, alternatively, would you have to remove everything and then only get the final return as the Scrap Trawler dies?

I really hope it's the former... :D

Order doesn't matter. All the triggers will be put on the stack at the same time.

1 Boompile resolves. During resolution, you put stuff into the graveyard. Every time you put an artifact you control in the graveyard, Scrap Trawler/Pia's Revolution triggers. They trigger multiple times if multiple nontoken artifacts are put in the graveyard.

2 You've finished resolving Boompile. Now the next time a player would receive priority (which is immediately) you put all the triggers on the stack, as per 603.3b.

603.3b If multiple abilities have triggered since the last time a player received priority, each player, in APNAP order, puts triggered abilities he or she controls on the stack in any order he or she chooses.

3 You pick the order you put them on the stack.

Thanks for that! I thought maybe if Pia's Revolution went with everything else, then it wouldn't be able to have its affect.

So, let's say I had 10 artifacts, used the Boompile and had both the Scrap Trawler and Pia's Revolution out, the opponent would then need to take 10 lots of damage or have 10 cards returned to my hand, regardless of the order the cards were revolved in? If all 10 lots of damage were taken, then I'd simply return 10 artifacts to my hand? Would it make any difference if I used the Boompile or the opponent did (or similar board-wiping card)?

I'm assuming in this case here I couldn't use those very same artifacts as the replacements from Scrap Trawler, but rather 10 that were already in my graveyard, since the current lot of cards are not "in" my graveyard but instead are "going to" my graveyard?

Doesn't matter who boardwipes. Pia's Revolution triggers once for every nontoken artifact and Scrap Trawler triggers once for every artifact.

It's not all rainbows for you though. You have to select all ten Scrap Trawler targets in a way to maximize your benefit and your opponent's damage. If Scrap Trawler is going to recur an artifact your opponent is going to choose to not take damage for Pia's Revolution since you are getting it back anyway. With this much recursion, your opponent could even let you have them all and take no damage, due to hand size limit. Your opponent will take 3 damage for everything he is able and desiring to stop, and let you get back anything he cannot stop or doesn't care about stopping.

Ah yes, this is true. I'm primarily intending it as a way to destroy the opponent's permanents, while still keeping mine (relatively) intact. At least for the artifacts. I will have to get Reliquary Tower out quickly for the huge hand then! :)
