Sacrificing with Desecration Demon - 2 Q's

Asked by CiAquatic 8 years ago

Me and my brother were playing casually the other day and I had a Desecration Demon out. It was a 7/7 and he had 4 life. He had an Elvish Mystic is play. I had a Doom Blade in hand. I forgot that I had it and swung with the Demon before killing his mystic. He sacrificed the Mystic and tapped the demon after I declared attackers. I then casted Doom Blade and killed the mystic.

Q 1: Can he sacrifice his Mystic and tap my Demon after I declared attacks and prevent it from attacking or will it have no effect because the Demon was already tapped?

Q 2: Can I cast Doom Blade and destroy Elvish Mystic before the ability resolves and taps Desecration Demon?

Thanks!

Because of timing restrictions you must give your opponents the opportunity to act and declare when you've moved to your combat step. If they pass priority back to you without doing anything you may then move on to declare attackers, and then it is too late to tap Desecration Demon. If you were not explicit then they have the right to rewind the game to an earlier state and perform that action, if you were explicit then they missed their opportunity to act.

By the time they have declared if and what they will sacrifice to Desecration Demon's triggered ability it will be too late to interact with it. The creature is sacrificed and no longer a valid target for Doom Blade. Even if it was simply to tap the creature, once the payment has been declared the trigger exists independent of its source and would resolve regardless, tapping Desecration Demon.
