Rules text interpretation - Card synergy

Asked by Astanashar 2 years ago

Hi All I have stumbled upon a game synergy I really would like to know, if it's legal. It concerns the rules text on Kazuul's Toll Collector on which there is a (0) ability to attach equipment. I hope/wonder if I could use the Colossus Hammer on it without paying more than the (0) mana? It seems to me that Kazzul overrides the actual mana cost of the hammer.

You're correct. Kazuul's Toll Collector can attach Equipment to itself without using the equip ability. Even if the equip isn't a mana cost (like Piston Sledge) you can still attach it for with the Toll Collector's ability. This DOES NOT count as activating an equip cost or equipping an Equipment, but it does count as the Toll Collector "becoming equipped" or the Equipment "becoming attached."

Polaris nails it. To further their second point, because it is the Toll Collector's ability, you would be able to attach an equipment to it even if the Collector had shroud.

Thanks a Lot for the quick answer. I would be in awe if any of you knows any other cards with the same equipping ability. Peter

There aren't a lot, but Brass Squire has a similar ability. Also consider Bruenor Battlehammer, Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist, Armory Automaton, Halvar, God of Battle  Flip, and Fervent Champion.

Polaris I have a feeling you left these out on purpose as they are slightly different. But I think they are still worth mentioning beause, if I understand correctly, OP was just asking about how to attach equipment without spending all too much?: Puresteel Paladin and Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale.
