Rona, Disciple of Gix + Kumano's Blessing = exile interaction?

Asked by ------ 6 years ago

Hi,my question would be, if I have the new card Rona, that allows you to cast stuff you exile with her, and enchant her with Kumano's Blessing that says "If a creature dealt damage by enchanted creature this turn would die, exile it instead.", can I cast my opponents creature?

What is the source of the exile - Rona or the enchantment?

No, it wouldn't work that way. The way Rona's abilities are written make them "linked abilities", which will basically only interact with each other. The middle ability that lets you cast things "exiled with Rona" only refers to cards specifically exiled by the first and last abilities, not by any other effect.

FYI, if a card isn't in the TappedOut system yet then it's best to either find some other way to link it or just write out the rules text so you can make sure everyone understands what's going on with your question.

I think you are gravely mistaken.

it says exiled with rona and that's it.

It says nothing about just counting for the abilities.

If rona gets any other exile interactions, they must work with that line of text.

Also, there is still no answer to what cards causes the exile as a source.

For Rona enchanted with Kumano's Blessing, the replacement effect that exiles a would-be-destroyed card belongs to the enchantment. Unless it has a phrase like "creature has" or "creatures have", it's not an ability of the creature. Skimming a Gatherer search for ("creature has" exile) and ("creatures have" exile), I believe that there is no card that grants a creature an ability that can exile another creature. A more sophisticated search might come up with something.

If a card had the text, for example, "Creatures you control have ': Exile target creature'" or "Enchanted creature has 'Whenever this creature deals damage to a creature, exile that creature'", that would be an example of a card that grants exiling.

Here are the relevant entries from the Comprehensive Rules:

607.1. An object may have two abilities printed on it such that one of them causes actions to be taken or objects or players to be affected and the other one directly refers to those actions, objects, or players. If so, these two abilities are linked: the second refers only to actions that were taken or objects or players that were affected by the first, and not by any other ability.

607.2a If an object has an activated or triggered ability printed on it that instructs a player to exile one or more cards and an ability printed on it that refers either to the exiled cards or to cards exiled with [this object], these abilities are linked. The second ability refers only to cards in the exile zone that were put there as a result of an instruction to exile them in the first ability.

607.4. An ability may be part of more than one pair of linked abilities.

Putting everything together: there are two sets of linked abilities on Rona, Disciple of Gix. The first and second abilities are linked, and the second and third abilities are linked. The "cards exiled with Rona" mentioned in the second ability only refers to cards in exile that were put there by either the first or third ability.
