Rite of Consumption targeting yourself

Asked by TMBRLZ 7 years ago

It's pretty straightforward.

If you cast Rite of Consumption targeting yourself (say to take advantage of the lifegain from it), and you made the damage within lethal range for yourself, would you also gain life in the same moment on resolution, thus doing essentially nothing other than net gaining zero life?

I imagine my hunch is right and it works the same as Lifelink in the combat damage step, but I wanted to be sure.

Correct. A player losing the game from having 0 or less life is a State-based action. SBA's are checked every time a player would receive priority.

However, during the resolution of a spell or ability, no player has priority so SBA's are not checked at that time. During the resolution of Rite of Consumption, if you go to 0 life, you will not lose because SBA's aren't checked until it's finished resolving which by that time you will have gained sufficient life to not be at 0 or less life.
