Resolute Archangel enchanted with Gift of Immortality

Asked by ME4Twaffle 9 years ago

Playing my friend and he has a Resolute Archangel enchanted with Gift of Immortality . I deal lethal damage. What phase does Resolute Archangel return?

It depends. Do you deal lethal damage to Resolute Archangel ? If so, then Resolute Archangel dies, Gift of Immortality 's ability triggers, and Resolute Archangel returns to the battlefield. All of this happens in the combat damage step after combat damage is assigned and dealt.

If you also kill your opponent, then he or she loses the game as a state-based action just as Resolute Archangel 's ability triggers, and the ability will never be put onto the stack because the game will end.

He doesn't die, just Resolute Archangel. We're trying to figure out if he heals due to Resolute Archangel's ability, or if it returns prior to combat damage being dealt?

All combat damage is dealt at the same time, and combat damage has to be dealt in order for you to deal lethal damage to Resolute Archangel (unless you're doing this with a burn spell or an ability you didn't mention).

As I said, Resolute Archangel dies and returns in the combat damage step, after damage is dealt.

Alright, what if I declare an attacker, he blocks with Resolute Archangel and I play Celestial Flare ?

Then Resolute Archangel will die and return in the declare blockers phase, before combat damage is dealt. Your attacker will still be blocked, though.

Except for the untap step, triggered abilities are always handled in the step during which they trigger.

Further clarification: When you say my creature will still be blocked, do you mean it would be blocked by the same creature upon its return to the battlefield?

No. Once a creature is blocked, it remains blocked for the rest of combat. Even if you removed the creature that was originally blocking it, it will still be blocked.

When a card changes zones, it becomes an entirely new object. The Resolute Archangel that returns to the battlefield will not be treated as the same Resolute Archangel that left the battlefield. It won't be blocking anything, nor will it even be involved in combat.

To make this further complicated, I had an Archetype of Aggression in play. Since my creature is still blocked, I assume I would still only assign anything more than 'lethal damage' (based on the removed creature's toughness) to my opponent?

Thank you very much for all of your assistance!

If an attacking creature with trample becomes blocked and all of its blockers are removed prior to the combat damage step, then the attacker will deal all of its damage to the defending player or planeswalker.
