Rescue From the Underworld VS Other reanimation spells

Asked by naejin 9 years ago

What happens when someone resolves Rescue from the Underworld , and then the opponent casts an instant speed reanimation spell (such as Grim Return , or Fated Return ) targeting the same exact creature that Rescue from the Underworld targeted or sacrificed before their end step? My guess is that the opponent's reanimation spell will resolve, and when Rescue from the Underworld tries to trigger, only one gets returned, as one of those creatures has joined the enemy. Interesting flavor result, or am I wrong?

If your opponent reanimates in response to your spell your creature is sacrificed and then the sacrificed creature would come back. And if he reanimates either of them while they are in the graveyard the other one would come back.

You're right they would get your creature and you basically just wasted a card and got rid of a creature for a short period of time.

This is incorrect. The creature is sacrificed as Rescue from the Underworld is cast. If the spell's only target then becomes illegal (such as if it gets removed from the graveyard by another reanimate-type spell) before Rescue resolves, then Rescue gets countered by the game rules and will not bring either creature back.

If, on the other hand, Rescue resolves and then the creature it targeted is removed from the graveyard, the delayed trigger created by Rescue will still being the sacrificed creature back.

I believe the OP was asking about this second scenario, but the clarification here is important.

After Rescue from the Underworld resolves, can an opponent counter a returning creature with something like Dissolve or Essence Scatter?

No, they aren't cast, they are just put onto the battlefield.

Also, it is generally best to create a new thread rather than post in an old one. The only way an old thread is likely to be seen is by people subscribed to it (by default, anyone who previously posted in it).
