Replacement effects that would replace each other

Asked by Godo 2 years ago

So how would for instance Divine Visitation and Chatterfang, Squirrel General react to me casting Raise the Alarm? Do both try to replace the effect of raise the alarm but only one gets to do it and the other just goes to waste? But then doesn't the other card want to re-replace and so forth? Thanks!

So, a replacement effect can't apply multiple times to the same event, but you can choose the order in which they apply. If you apply Divine Visitation first, you'll replace "two Soldiers" with "two Angels," then Chatterfang's effect makes it "two Angels plus two Squirrels." If you apply Chatterfang, Squirrel General first, you'll replace "two Soldiers" with "two Soldiers plus two Squirrels," then Divine Visitation will replace that with "two Angels plus two Angels."

While replacement effects don't loop, there are situations where they can apply to an event because of another replacement effect.

Let's say you have Hullbreacher and your opponent draws two cards during your turn. Divine Visitation and Chatterfang don't care. Then Hullbreacher replaces that draw with you making two Treasures. They're non creature tokens, so Visitation still doesn't apply, but now Chatterfang does, so it adds "two Treasures (plus two Squirrels)." Now that you're making creature tokens, Visitation applies and makes that "two Treasures (plus two Angels)."
