Regarding Prosperity and milling multiple players at once.

Asked by Dvious 9 years ago

I'm simplifying the situation I had today, but it will answer my question regardless.

-Player 1 has 7 cards in their library.

-Player 2 has 9 cards in their library.

Player 1 plays Prosperity where the X=10. Each player draws 10 cards.

If my understanding of state-based actions is correct. Both players would lose?

704.1. State-based actions are game actions that happen automatically whenever certain conditions (listed below) are met.

704.3. Whenever a player would get priority (see rule 116, "Timing and Priority"), the game checks for any of the listed conditions for state-based actions, then performs all applicable state-based actions simultaneously as a single event.

704.5b If a player attempted to draw a card from a library with no cards in it since the last time state-based actions were checked, he or she loses the game.

I'm pretty sure those are the rules that are being applied here. Hopefully I'm not misinterpreting anything. Thanks for the help!

Both of them will die, because they need to draw the cards simultaneously, and all of them at once(not card by card, which would let player 1 lose first), and while both have less cards in their library than they need to draw, they would "attempted to draw a card from a library with no cards in it" as said in the ruling. So player 1 killed himself as well as player 2, and the game would end in a draw, as long as there isn't a third player.

If you visit www.magiccards.info you can search for every of your cards, and sometimes, there's a specific card rule which explains some special situations. For Prosperity, there's also one which would have answered your question: "If both players run out of cards during this effect, the game is a draw."

Just a small correction. Cards are always considered to be drawn one at a time and therefore each card drawn will trigger "whenever (a player/an opponent/you) draw/draws a card..." effects. The reason that both players will lose simultaneously is that state-based actions are only checked when a player would receive priority, not in the middle of spell resolution. This is the same reason that Psychosis Crawler does not die during Wheel of Fortune effects.
