reflecting pool and thriving lands

Asked by koylucumert 1 year ago

so, I know that if you have 2 Reflecting Pool s and no other lands, they both can produce any color mana since they both see each other as "could" produce a mana of any color. how about thriving lands? lets say as an example Thriving Isle. lets say I have a thriving isle with the named color green, and a reflecting pool, and no other lands. can my reflecting pool produce mana of any color, since the isle "could" produce any color of mana if I named that color?

There are two rulings on Reflecting Pool that are relevant here.

First: 2 Pools do not make any color of mana because they don't have an intrinsic ability that could make mana.

Multiple Reflecting Pools won’t help each other produce mana. If you control a Reflecting Pool, and all other lands you control either lack mana abilities or are other Reflecting Pools, you may still activate Reflecting Pool’s ability — it just won’t produce any mana. (2008-05-01)

Second: Yes, it'll be able to tap for the colors that you name as the Thriving lands have the ability to produce mana of that color

Any change to a land’s type or splicing of text into a land can affect the types of mana a land can produce. (2004-10-04)

Slight edit to my response as it does not read as I intended.

Reflecting Pool does have a mana ability, but their mana generation is essentially 'undefined' until something else can make mana
