redirect+blunt the assault

Asked by likasumbody 9 years ago

Hi,

I was wondering if someone could advise me on the ruling for the below.I was playing with my friend and I casted Blunt the Assault in response to him attacking with all his creatures. He then proceeded to use Redirect and gained life based on the total creatures on the battlefield. Was that a legal move? It seems to me that because Blunt the Assault didnt target any creatures, he should not have been able to Redirect it at all... could you please advise? thank you.

Blunt the Assault has not targets, so Redirect has no effect on it. As he does not gain control of the spell you still gain the life as well.

From Gatherer: "Redirect can target any spell, not just an instant or sorcery spell. For example, you could use it to change the target of an Aura spell. However, if the targeted spell has no targets (for example, if it's an instant or sorcery spell that doesn't specifically use the word "target," or if it's a creature spell), Redirect won't have any effect on it."

Holy internet translations, Batman!

In order for someone to even cast Redirect , it needs to be targeting a spell that targets something, as in it literally needs to have the word "target" in its rules text.

If I cast Lightning Bolt and you're the target, you can Redirect the Bolt back to me (or to whatever you want). Same thing with Murder , Unsummon , Thoughtseize , etc.

However, something like Blunt the Assault is an illegal target for Redirect because Blunt the Assault doesn't target anything. It's just an effect once it goes off.

Technically, I was incorrect; I just caught myself.

You can target Blunt the Assault with Redirect , but since Blunt has no targets of its own, Redirect simply won't do anything at all.
